UK 2050 CALCULATOR TEAM VISITS ENERGY COMMISSION
A team of experts in energy/emission modeling, known as UK 2050
Calculator paid a courtesy visit to the Energy Commission on 24th May 2019. The
Team consisted of Dr. Jeremy Wood as the Head, Dr. Onesmus Nwabonje, Dr Gbemi Oluleye
all from Imperial College London and Ms. Sandy Domangue of British High Commission, Abuja.
Dr Jeremy remarked that their aim was to support and assist the existing
Calculator to enable the nations of the world, especially those in the European Union and
other parts of Africa change the ways they produce and consume energy in order to drastically
reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
While welcoming the Team, the Director General reiterated the commitment of
Nigeria to a transition policy of moving the country from moderate to a low carbon emission.
He stated that hydrocarbon forms about 70 percent of the economic base of
Nigeria and sees gas flaring as a misnomer. He warned of the adverse effect of hydrocarbon on
the climate and emphasized that plans were on to transit from fossil fuel based to the
environmentally friendly sources of energy.
The Director of Energy Planning and Analysis of the Commission,
Engr. J.S. Olayande who heads the ECN 2050 Calculator Team, sought the guidance of the
Team in Program Writing and Format, while Mr. Segun Ogunfowora of the Energy Information
System Department highlighted some of the challenges facing the utilization of the current Calculator 2050.
It could be recalled that the ECN had launched an energy-emission modeling
tool known as Nigeria 2050 Calculator in 2015 after a fruitful support from UK Department
of Energy and Climate Change (UK-DECC) and the British High Commission.
Among the other ECN representatives present during the meeting were Dr. A.S. Ahmed,
Mr Abdelnasser Abdallah, Engr. I.U. Ibrahim and Mela Kelechi N. (Mrs).
The Director General thanked the Team for the visit as he looked forward to a more
robust and excellent relationship.
