The Chairman/CEO of Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC),  Engr. Dr.  F. Erepano Osaisai FNSE, FAEng and his entourage paid a courtesy visit to the Energy Commission of Nigeria on the 15th July, 2014. In his speech, the Chairman Atomic Energy Commission congratulated the Director General (DG), Energy Commission of Nigeria, ECN on his confirmation as the new DG and prayed for a fruitful and successful tenure.

He introduced the members of his entourage, who were management staff of his Commission. The Chairman, NAEC further announced the purpose of the visit, to among other things include: strengthening of sectoral synergy for the continuation of the National Nuclear Power Development Program (NNPDP) and to seek how to enhance efforts towards greater contribution of Atomic Energy to the National Energy Mix.

The Chairman, NAEC briefed the DG, ECN on what has been done so far and likely direction for progress, since energy is a major resource for development in any country. He raised the need to intensify the exploitation of resources to meet industrial and domestic need of the country. Since NAEC is primarily responsible for development of Atomic Energy in the country, he said the agency has been trying to implement NNPDP for 7-8years. The program, according to him, is in three phases: Development of road map of the Nuclear Energy Program of Nigeria, which was approved by the Federal Government since February 2007. The Road Map consists of manpower development, infrastructure development, requisite nuclear power infrastructure in the country to support the implementation of the programme.

The second phase of the programme, according to the Chairman, consists of design, certification, proper licensing regulatory approvals as well as construction and start-up of the nuclear power plant. He went further to explain that the third phase is the implementation of the nuclear power plant.

“It is a Nigerian Project so we all have to take ownership” said the Chairman. A copy of the national report on the road map carried out by NAEC, was presented to the DG, ECN.

In response to the Chairman’s presentation, the DG/CEO Energy Commission of Nigeria, Professor E.J. Bala FNSE, FNAEng thanked the Chairman and his team for the warm fellowship. The DG introduced the structure of the Energy Commission, mentioning the various departments and their heads.

A powerpoint presentation was made by the DG. The presentation explained that the Energy Commission of Nigeria was established in 1979, under the ECN Act which commenced operation in 1989. The DG mentioned the various energy research centres. According to him, with the activation of NAEC in 2006 after its establishment by law, 30years earlier, the two Nuclear Energy research centers were transferred to NAEC, to assist in the operationalization of its mandate.

The DG also stated that the ECN, so as to encourage and ensure smooth take-off for NAEC, was able to support NAEC’s activities in the Nuclear Power Programme. The DG urged NAEC to take advantage of the Strategic Energy plan developed by the ECN, as complimentary input to all considerations in its power programme; He requested for greater synergy between the two sister organisations, in line with its mandate for the coordination of National Policy on Energy in all its all ramifications.

The ECN according to the DG, is specifically willing to partner with NAEC on advocacy, to improve the negative perception of nuclear power, as revealed by a recent pilot survey of public perception of nuclear power.

In appreciation of the NAEC courtesy visit, copies of the National Energy Policy and other policy-related publications of ECN were presented to the Chairman Atomic Energy Commission by the DG ECN.

After lively deliberations among the representatives of the two organisations, the meeting ended on a good note with group photographs taken by the Media personnel present.
