On the 25th November 2016, the Director General, Energy Commission of Nigeria, Professor E.J. Bala received the representatives of Mitsui & Co., Ltd, a Japan originated company, in the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) on official partnership interaction. The representatives include:

Mr.  Akihiko Yoshizumi       -       DGM Overseas Dept.

Mr. Shusha Sean Okamura -     GM African Strategy & Promotion Dept.

Mr. Koji Yoshizaki              -         Chief Analyst, Africa

Mr. Keiichi Shirato             -     Chief Analyst Middle East & Africa Dept.

The Director-General/CEO of Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) introduced the ECN as the Agency of the Government of Nigeria, with the mandate of producing strategic plans and coordinating national policies for the Energy sector of the country.

The DG assured the team of a favourable ground in the power sector of the economy. According to him, “At this time, the country is looking for investors, even in the power sector, which has a demand of nothing less than 100,000MW having only 12,000MW. This is an investable ground”. He added that although the country has distributing zones, foreign investors are permitted to come and work together with these distributing zones.

Professor Bala went further to explain to the group, the investment opportunities in the Nuclear and Solar power sector of the country. He however noted that as far as the energy sector in the country is concerned, there is every need to visit the Minister of Power and the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for licensing. He also advised them to meet with state Governors, who will link them to communities where such projects can be carried out.

In the course of the interaction, the DG suggested that the representatives should visit the Ministry of Communication for their ICT interests and the Ministry of Agriculture for their Agro-processing interests. This, according to him is for better enlightenment and information in these fields. The visitors were later presented with various publications of the Commission.

Earlier, Mr. Yoshizumi, the leader of Mitsui & Co., Ltd team revealed that the company had been in the country before now, but the then harsh and unfavourable investment environment, proved very unfriendly and so their investment it could not stand the test of time.

He further explained that the Japanese Multinational Engineering Company, which was established around 103 years ago as a trading firm and has diverted to a long term investment company. This according to him is due to the fact that it is bent on bringing industrial contribution to its hosting country. He added that the company globally specializes in diverse sectors of the economy such as Energy, Finance, Food, ICT, Machinery, Infrastructural project, amongst others.

He disclosed that the team primarily came to the Commission to find out and discuss the investment opportunities in the country. He went further to say that as a result of the researches made on the potential opportunities to be explored in Nigeria, the Company, which is into Power, Agricultural processing and also ICT, has taken a bold step in liaising with many private firms in the Country.
