WORKSHOP ON DISSEMINATION OF ENERGY AUDIT REPORT OF SELECTED PUBLIC BUILDINGS IN ABUJA: ECN - JICA FOLLOW-UP COOPERATION TRAINING ON POLICY PLANNING FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CONSERVATION
A one-day workshop on ECN- JICA Follow- up Cooperation Training on Policy Planning for Energy Efficiency and Conservation, which held on the 16th February, 2017 at the Newton Park Hotel Cape town Crescent, Zone 4 Wuse, Abuja, was to identify current pattern of Energy Consumption, Energy Waste streams, and ways to curb Energy Consumption and Wastage.
The headquarters of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), the Consumer Protection Council (CPC), and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) all located in Abuja metropolis were selected for the study.
The energy audit monitored the energy consumption of all electrical appliances in these buildings and also the attitudes of the users, as well as the need and technical possibility of integration of renewable energy source into the buildings i.e. increase energy mix.
In the opening remark the Chairman of the occasion and Director General, ECN, Professor Eli J. Bala welcomed all the participants, who included the Special Guest of Honor of the event, the Minister of Science and Technology Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, represented by Mr. Sulaiman Adamu Abubakar (an Assistant. Director in the Ministry), Representative of the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Engr. Julius Olumafu, the Senior Representative of JICA-Nigeria Office Ms Mamiko Okumara, representative of UNIDO, Dr. Reuben Bamidele, Acting Managing Director, REA, Engr. Abubakar Wassaram and the Director Surveillance and Enforcement, CPC, Engr. Shama T. Kolo, among others.


In his key note address, Mr. Suleiman Adamu Abubakar said the objective of the energy audit and auditors is in line with the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s vision of developing local content and home grown capacity of our Human Resources. Miss Okumura Senior Representative, JICA-Nigeria Office, in her address said this follow up co-operation project will complement the government’s efforts to promote efficient energy use and strengthen existing co-operation ties between the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that of  Japan.

At the end of the first session, Dr. Mrs. Roseline Kela, Director, Energy Management, Training and Manpower (EMTMD), ECN gave the vote of thanks.

The Technical Session, which followed the opening session, was chaired by Engr. Abubakar Wassaram, the Acting Managing Director Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

The papers presented were:
- PAPER I: “Scope of the Energy Audit” by Dr. (Mrs.) Roseline Kela, Director, Energy Management, Training and Manpower Development, ECN.
- PAPER II: “Distribution Box Energy Audit” by Engr. Jude C. Asogwa- Head of Distribution Box (DB) Energy Audit Group/ Assistant Chief Scientific Officer, ECN.
- PAPER III: “Plug-in Loads Energy Audit” by Engr. James Audu Gana - Head of Plug-in Loads Energy Audit Group/ Senior Scientific Officer, ECN.
- PAPER IV: “Behavioral Energy Audit” by Mr. Samuel Abraham Aku - Head of Behavioral Energy Audit (BEA) Group/ Chief Scientific Officer, ECN.
- PAPER V: “Renewable Energy and Bio-Climatic Design Energy Audit” by Mrs. Adeola Eleri - Head of Renewable Energy, Bio-Climatic Design (RE BCN) Group/ Senior Scientific Officer, ECN.
- PAPER VI: “Emerging Policy Directions from the Energy Audit” by Mr Sulu B. Ibrahim, Head of the ECN Audit Team.
At the end of each paper presentation, there was a discussion period where participants were given opportunity to ask questions and get clarifications on grey areas.

Concluding the event, the Director Energy Information System (EIS), ECN, Engr. J. O. Ojosu in his closing remarks observed the need to link with Nigeria Association of Architects and the Nigerian Builders Association as they also can make adequate use of the information collated, in their practice. He thanked the organizers, partners and all participants.
