According to the presenters, the Energy Commission of Nigeria in pursuance of its responsibility to ensure the establishment of the Nigerian National Energy Databank assigned a private firm, Web Solutions Limited Abuja, an Information Technology firm to develop the portal and databases, which includes a web-based system for storing, processing and retrieving energy information both in time series and spatial data, static and dynamic.

 The resource persons outlined challenges faced by the project including:

  1. Data inconsistency;
  2. Lack of skills to develop an interface for users to query, generate and carry out an in-depth analysis of data;
  3. Lack of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices that can be used to collect accurate data on locations, which would have make data easy to update and more relevant to the need of users;
  4. Lack of resources (fund, vehicles, software packages etc) to obtain data from source and to facilitate movement to follow up on data collection.

At the end of the workshop, the resource persons recommended the following:

  1. Staff training on Data Collection, Analysis, Reporting, Query as related to Energy Data;
  2. Tools such as the GPS application system need to be acquired to enhance accurate collection of data on energy related projects nationwide and their location data for mapping and visualization;
  3. There is need for adequate funding to move the project forward to overcome the stated challenges.
