Dearth of professionals, cause of energy crisis- DG,ECN Printable Version E-mail

Vanguard Newspaper 26th Aug 2009 (Abridged)

The Director- General, Energy Commission of Nigeria, Prof. Abubakar S. Sambo, …. attributed the problem of energy production and utilization in the country to the dearth of professionals with broad training in, and understanding of energy production, delivery, consumption and its impact on the environment, despite Nigeria’s turn out of graduates from universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

“For instance, there is no university or polytechnic that runs programmes in energy studies like renewable energy, management, etc. The traditional departments (mechanical, electrical or agricultural engineering) of universities and polytechnics only deal with fundamental principles of sciences and Mathematics in system designs, which may not address the problem of energy production and utilization,” Prof. Sambo said

Sambo made this assertion while speaking at a one-day sensitization and awareness forum on Renewable Energy Initiative and Environment Protection in Edo State, organized by National Centre for Energy and Environment of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, University of Benin. He disclosed that the National Centre for Energy and Environment would provide a road map for developing the talents, skills, capability and creativity needed in solving the problems of environmental degradation from the exploration and utilization of the nation’s fossil fuels.

“In Nigeria where oil companies are less concerned with the negative impacts of oil exploration and production, it is very important that we have institutions focusing on environmental issues’” he saidHe said the choice of the University of Benin was in recognition of its competence in the area of environment as well as its strategic location in the Niger Delta, which was very vulnerable to negative impacts of oil and gas activities.

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Alhassan Bako Zaku, said the creation of the National Centre for Energy and Environment (NCEE) by the federal government, through the Energy Commission of Nigeria, was an appropriate response to sustainability challenges of declining fossil resources, ecosystem degradation, climate change and waste management problems facing Nigeria in the 21st Century. He described the Forum as the most appropriate and opportune time for both the private and public sectors to synthesize research findings and present a holistic picture of the environmental challenges of the threatened coastal region of Nigeria to government and all stakeholders.
