- Renewable Energy Masterplan (Revised Draft NEMP_2014)
The development of renewable energy is central in the National Energy policy as well as the National Energy Master Plan (NEMP).
Renewable energy resource is a resource that can be re-generated through natural process within a relatively short time e.g.
solar, wind, biomass, hydropower, ocean, geothermal, etc. The Renewable Energy Master Plan (REMP) sets out in the short,
medium and long terms within the national energy supply mix as well as articulate strategic approach and measure to meet
the targets.
This REMP is therefore a roadmap for actualization of government’s commitment to create the necessary enabling environment for
sustainable energy supply for national development with active participation of the private sector. It is divided into programmes
with target, timelines and activities. Incentives to promote the attainment of the programmes as well as generally grow the
renewable energy market are also provided. You can request for a copy through our contacts.

- Energy Modelling and Energy Demand Projections
Since the Energy Commission of Nigeria is responsible for policy formulation on energy, it undertook the development
of National Energy Master Plan for Nigeria. The Master Plan required long-term projections of energy demand by sector and energy form
with the aid of computer based models developed by IAEA called MAED and MESSAGE Models.
The Model for Analysis of the Energy Demand, MAED - Evaluates future energy demand based on medium to long-term scenarios of
socio-economic, technological and demographic developments. It relates the specific energy demand for producing various goods
and services identified in the model, to the corresponding social, economic and technological factors that affect this demand.
The nature and level of the demand for goods and services are a function of several determining factors; including population
growth, number of inhabitants per dwelling, number of electrical appliances used in households, peoples, mobility and preferences
for transportation modes, national priorities for development of certain industries or economic sectors, the evolution of the
efficiency of certain types of equipment, market penetration of new technologies or energy forms, etc.
The Model for Energy Supply Strategy Alternatives and their General Environmental Impact, MESSAGE- Is an
optimisation model used for medium to long-term energy supply system planning, energy policy analysis and scenario development.
- Energy Summit
As energy plays a vital role in the economic growth, progress, and development, as well as poverty eradication
and security of any nation, uninterrupted energy supply is what every country wants to achieve. Future economic growth crucially
depends on the long-term availability of energy from sources that are affordable, accessible, and environmentally friendly.
Security, climate change, and public health are closely interrelated with energy. Energy is an important factor in all the sectors
of any country's economy. The standard of living of a given country can be directly related to the per capita energy consumption.
The recent world's energy crisis is due to two reasons: the rapid population growth and the increase in the living standard of
whole societies.
The Energy Commission of Nigeria, a federal government agency, charged with the responsibility for strategic
planning and coordination of National policies in the field of energy in all its ramifications. In doing so, amongst other things,
it shall monitor the performance of the energy sector in the execution of government policies and programmes, as well as advise
the government of the federation or a state on issues relating to energy such as adequate funding of the energy sector, energy
production and distribution, research and development.
In 2010, the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) instituted the National Energy Summit as an annual event to provide a
high-level forum to discuss relevant contemporary issues and new developments in the energy sector. The Summit brings together policy makers,
government officials, investors, developers, senior executives, members of professional bodies as well as experts and scholars in the summit
to discuss and come up with ideas and solutions towards improving the energy sector in the country.
Also, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the IEC Secretariat and the ECN was signed on activities that will
enable the Commission achieve its mandate. Amongst the activities was the institution of an annual National Energy Summit between then
and 2023 to promote high level discussion towards addressing the challenges of energy security, economic development and environmental
protection simultaneously.
